NEVER Be Useful. (Machiavelli's Law of Becoming Necessary)

You are the most competent person in the room, and it has bought you nothing. The work routes through you, the emergencies land on your desk — and the promotion went to a man who has never once stayed past six. You were told this was a patience problem. It is not. Machiavelli never advised the prince to be useful; he advised him to make himself needed. Useful is a price. Necessary is a position. Two mechanisms in your own nervous system explain why every hour you give away for free makes you harder to see — and five laws reverse the current.
